Preventing the “Summer Slide”

Do you have children who are struggling readers?  Perhaps they are marginally reading on level.  FreshStart Literacy offers tutoring for grades kinder- 4th grade in the Fort Worth, TX area.  For more information about how to get your son/daughter involved leave your name and child's grade level in the discussion tab (FreshStart Literacy: Summer Bridge) along with any area of concern that we can address.  Avoid the "Academic Slide" that happens during the summer months; sign- up today to keep your child on track for academic success.  The "Academic slide" for educator’s means that for the first two months or so of the fall semester, teachers are spending precious hours of instruction with remedial work, assisting students in getting back on track and ready to receive new instruction.  These first four to six week are pivotal even for students who are already performing on level at the end of June.   However, if your student has become frustrated due to this summer achievement gap, it could result in poor classroom behavior; reductions in your student’s confidence and further demonstrate itself in low self-esteem.   A study done in the Grand Rapids Public Schools from 2003 and 2004 showed the summer learning loss reached almost 40 percent for some of their students.  Let’s have One Crazy Summer and prevent the “Summer Slide” by turning our attention to books instead of hours of video games, and keeping some type of educational focus/structure throughout the summer months.  If you know a neighbor or a friend that may need assistance, share this information with them the bottom line is to help student’s with academic success eradicating illiteracy making All Things Bright and Beautiful!

I have decided to make it “Official”

I began tutoring (Pre-K-6th) in 2007, as well as volunteering in local Adult Education programs in addition to being a substitute teacher in a local district. I have a passion for education personally and for educating others. I have given resources to many to start and operate a business, so I believe I will use these same resources and contacts to start my own. No more delay!

The plan is complete, the board is coming together nicely. Next will be 5013c status. There are so many people that need educational opportunities that can not afford the mainstream avenues, not to mention the social phobia for young and old of everyone or anyone knowing "You can't Read! "

Literacy Tips: Everyday Literacy PBS KIDS!: "Everyday Literacy Vocabulary Building Teach your kids new words We have many vocabulary-building features on this Web site including Word Play and Synonym Sam's Lab. Our Printables area also has some original word games. Comment on new words as they come up in stories, on TV or on the radio. Introduce synonyms - words that mean the same thing. If your kids talk about 'the day after today,' introduce the word 'tomorrow.' Correct word errors with simple examples or corrections. If they say 'We runned home!' you could say, 'Wow! You RAN home?' Or, more simply, 'You could say that you RAN home.' Find books that your kids like at the library. You can then use subjects they're interested in to add new vocabulary to their conversation. Open a dictionary and pick a word they probably know. See if they can guess the word by reading them the definition. Help them understand that some words have several meanings, like 'watch.' Check out our tips in 'The Big Book of Words.' Write out pairs of opposites on bits of paper and get your kids to match them up. Introduce a new word and ask them to guess which definition is right? Is HALIBUT a fish, a game or a President? They'll want to learn more when they're having fun! Include kids in your conversations with other adults by using words they can mostly understand. Then they will be able to learn any new ones by getting the meaning from the surrounding sentence. Pick a new word every day and teach it to your kid. Use it so they hear it in context. Encourage them to use it, and use it yourself. Even over-using it will be fun."
